Illinois is one of only a few states that do not require its riders, regardless of age, to wear a safety helmet.  Eye protection is required unless the motorcycle is equipped with a windscreen. Bike Specifications

Illinois has motorcycle equipment laws that are meant to keep riders and their passengers safe.  Handlebars must be no taller than shoulder height, and a passenger seat and footrest is required when carrying a passenger.  Additional regulations include:

  • One rearview mirror, right or left side
  • There is no restriction on radar detectors
  • Turn signals are not required
  • There are no periodic safety inspections
  • A muffler is required and may not be modified to amplify noise above the volume emitted by the muffler as originally installed.

Off-Road Riding

Illinois places few restrictions on off-road motorcycle riding. Helmets and eye protection are not required. Headlights and taillights are also optional equipment. There is no limit to the maximum sound level allowed.

Rules of the Road

Periodic safety inspections are not required by law. Lane splitting is not permitted, but motorcycles may be ridden two abreast in a single lane if both drivers consent.

Insurance Requirements

Illinois requires motorcycle riders to carry liability insurance providing, at a minimum, coverage for:

  • Bodily injury coverage of at least $20,000 per person injured, and $40,000 for all persons injured in an accident
  • Property damage coverage of at least $15,000
