Bike Specifications

Our nation’s Capitol, Washington, D.C., imposes various laws regulating the specifications of motorcycles. The laws include:

  • A passenger seat and passenger footrest are required when carrying a passenger
  • A mirror on the left side of a motorcycle is required
  • Handlebars must be no higher than 15" above the seat
  • Periodic safety inspections are not required
  • Mufflers are required and modifying the exhaust system to increase the noise emitted is forbidden
  • Handlebars may not exceed 15 inches above the seat
  • Maximum sound level allowed is 82 decibels for a motorcycle traveling less than 35 miles per hour; 86 decibels for a motorcycle exceeding 35 miles per hour.

Off-Road Riding

Washington, D.C., places virtually no restrictions on the off-road operation of motorcycles. Safety helmets and eye protection are not required.  There is no minimum operator age.   Spark arrestors are not required. Headlights and taillights are not required at any time of day.

Rules of the Road

Washington, D.C., accepts Rider Education completion cards and motorcycle endorsements from other states.
